Alcohol and the Midlife Body: An Honest Accounting

There is a particular social compact around alcohol that operates among women of a certain age — one that is so normalized it has become invisible. The wine at book club. The cocktails at the dinner party. This compact is so embedded in midlife female life that questioning it feels almost rude.

This essay is not a judgment. It is an accounting. Because the honest relationship between alcohol and the midlife female body is significantly different from what most women have been led to believe.

The hormonal shifts of perimenopause change the way the body processes alcohol. As estrogen declines, alcohol metabolism slows. The same quantity of wine that felt manageable at forty may produce worse effects at fifty-two. This is not weakness. It is biochemistry.

The sleep disruption is perhaps the most consequential effect. Alcohol fragments sleep architecture profoundly, suppressing REM sleep and producing rebound wakefulness.

The question is not whether alcohol is enjoyable. It clearly is. The question is whether the enjoyment is worth what it is costing — in sleep, in inflammation, in the long-term health of the body you are trying to care for.

None of this is an argument for prohibition. It is an argument for honesty — for understanding what you are trading when you pour the third glass.
