Bone Health After Menopause: The Silent Emergency

Osteoporosis is a disease that announces itself, in most cases, only when a bone breaks. There is no pain in the silent years of bone loss. Approximately twenty percent of women who sustain a hip fracture die within a year of the injury.

The physiology is straightforward. Estrogen inhibits osteoclasts — the cells responsible for breaking down old bone tissue. When estrogen declines, bone resorption exceeds formation.

The interventions are multiple and meaningful. Weight-bearing exercise stimulates bone formation. Calcium and vitamin D provide raw materials. Protein supports the collagen matrix that gives bone its resilience.

Bone health is not glamorous. It is not visible. But the woman who has attended to it will be able to do everything else she wants to do, for decades longer than the one who has not.

The starting point is a DEXA scan — the bone density measurement recommended for all women at age sixty-five and for younger women with risk factors.
