We do not have a well-developed cultural vocabulary for ambition in its later forms: the ambition of the woman whose children are grown, whose career has reached its natural level, and who finds herself with the question open again. What is this for? What am I trying to build?
The ambition that survives the midlife reckoning tends to look different from the ambition of youth. It is less concerned with external validation and more interested in the intrinsic quality of the work.
The research on purpose and wellbeing in later life is consistent: people who have clear answers to 'what is this for?' live longer, think more clearly, and experience greater psychological wellbeing.
The ambition of midlife, at its best, is not about what you can accumulate. It is about what you can become — and what, in the time remaining, you might actually contribute.
