This is not an article arguing that one is better than the other. Both are clinically valid. Both produce real results. Both serve clients well — when they are the right tool for the right person at the right stage of their aging journey.
But they work through opposite mechanisms. And understanding that difference is what allows you to make an informed decision about which one — or which combination — is right for you.
How Botox Works
Botulinum toxin temporarily blocks the nerve signal that tells a muscle to contract. Injected into an expression muscle — the corrugator that creates the furrowed brow, the orbicularis oculi around the eyes, the frontalis across the forehead — it prevents that muscle from firing. The overlying skin, no longer being pulled by the contracted muscle, relaxes. The line softens or disappears.
This is the mechanism: paralysis. Not partial relaxation. Not re-education. The muscle is prevented from contracting for the duration of the toxin's effect — typically 3 to 4 months — after which the signal returns and the muscle resumes its normal activity. Another treatment is required to maintain the result.
The effect of repeated Botox over years is worth understanding clinically. Muscles that are prevented from contracting repeatedly undergo disuse atrophy — they lose mass and tone from lack of use, the same way any muscle does when it is not exercised. For many clients this produces the desired result of softening expression lines. For others — particularly those who began treatments early and continued for many years — it can contribute to a flattened or expressionless appearance and in some cases paradoxically accelerates the loss of facial volume and definition that they are trying to prevent.
How TAMA Blue Onyx Works
TAMA Blue Onyx uses a completely different mechanism. It uses electrical current — specifically the patented Shambayati MetaWave technology — to deliver sub-sensory electromagnetic impulses to the facial muscles, dermis, and subcutaneous layer.
Where Botox prevents muscle contraction, TAMA Blue Onyx stimulates and re-educates muscle function. The electrical current wakes muscles up — particularly the lifting muscles of the face that have lost tone and elongated over time — and gradually trains them to return to a higher, firmer position and hold it.
This is the opposite of atrophy. TAMA Blue Onyx strengthens the facial muscles. With each session they become more toned, more responsive, and more capable of maintaining a lifted position. The improvement is cumulative — each session builds on the last because the muscles are developing real strength and memory, not simply being prevented from moving.
TAMA Blue Onyx also simultaneously boosts cellular ATP production — the energy currency of the skin cell. More ATP means more active fibroblasts, more collagen production, and better tissue repair. The treatment works on the muscle and the skin simultaneously. Botox does not touch the skin at all.
The Core Philosophical Difference
Botox treats aging by reducing the visible effect of muscle movement. TAMA Blue Onyx treats aging by restoring the muscular tone and definition that has declined.
These are not competing approaches to the same problem. They address different components of facial aging.
Expression lines — the dynamic lines caused by repeated muscle contraction — respond well to Botox. The muscle is the cause and Botox addresses it directly.
Structural descent — the gradual lowering of facial features as the lifting muscles lose tone, the soft tissue loses support, and gravity does its work over decades — does not respond to Botox because Botox does not lift. It relaxes. Structural descent responds to treatments that strengthen the underlying muscular architecture — which is exactly what TAMA Blue Onyx is designed to do.
Who Benefits from Botox
Clients with strong dynamic expression lines — forehead furrows, glabellar lines between the brows, crow's feet from smiling — where the repetitive muscle movement is the primary driver of the visible concern. Clients who want rapid, predictable results for a specific event or timeline. Clients who have good underlying facial structure and volume and primarily want to soften expression-driven lines.
Who Benefits from TAMA Blue Onyx
Clients who notice their face has descended — brows that sit lower than they used to, a jawline that is less defined, cheeks that have flattened, a jowl area that has begun to develop. Clients who want to prevent or reverse structural aging through strengthening rather than through chemical intervention. Clients who are not candidates for injectables or who prefer a non-injectable approach. Clients who are injectable-fatigued and looking for a maintenance and support system between treatments or instead of continuing injections. Clients who want to address aging proactively before significant descent occurs.
Can They Be Used Together?
Yes — and for many clients the combination is more effective than either alone.
Botox softens the expression lines that overactive muscles create. TAMA Blue Onyx simultaneously re-educates and strengthens the lifting muscles that structural descent has weakened. Together they address both components — relaxing what needs to relax and strengthening what needs to strengthen.
The protocol at Amata Lucè is to wait one month after any Botox or filler injection before beginning TAMA Blue Onyx — this allows the injectable product to fully integrate before electromagnetic current is introduced. After that window the treatments are fully compatible.
What TAMA Blue Onyx Feels Like
This surprises almost every new client: you feel almost nothing. The MetaWave current is completely sub-sensory — below the threshold of perception. There is no electrical sensation, no muscle twitching, no discomfort. The probe moves in slow deliberate passes across the face. Most clients fall asleep during treatment.
There is no downtime. You can apply makeup and return to normal activities immediately. Many clients come during a lunch break.
The Protocol at Amata Lucè
For clients whose primary concern is lifting, contouring, and muscle re-education, a structured TAMA Blue Onyx series is recommended — weekly sessions for 6 to 8 weeks for clients 35 to 55, weekly for 8 to 10 weeks for clients 55 and over — followed by maintenance sessions.
TAMA Blue Onyx is available as an ongoing protocol — up to twice per week during rest months between microneedling series. During rest months it is the primary modality keeping fibroblasts active and muscle re-education progressing while deep collagen matures.
