The Protein Question: How Much, From Where, and Why It Matters More Than You Think

Protein has undergone a significant reputational rehabilitation. It has re-emerged in the research as one of the most consequential nutritional variables for midlife women — not for aesthetics, but for the preservation of metabolic health, cognitive function, bone density, and the biological machinery that makes an active later life possible.

As we age, the muscle protein synthesis response to a given dose of protein diminishes — a phenomenon called anabolic resistance. The older body requires more dietary protein to achieve the same muscle-building stimulus.

The practical target — 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day — should be distributed across the day rather than concentrated in one large serving. Approximately 30 to 40 grams of protein at a sitting maximally stimulates synthesis.

Protein is not a supplement. It is a structural requirement — the raw material from which the body rebuilds itself daily.

The best protein sources are those that are complete and have high bioavailability. Eggs, fish, poultry, dairy products, and legumes combined with grains all meet this criterion.
