G3 — Skin Concern Guide

Acne Scars: what can be corrected, and what only time will fade

The breakouts stopped years ago. What stayed is the record of them — shadows that appear under overhead lighting, a cheek that photographs unevenly, small dents you can feel with your fingertips.

Most disappointment in scar treatment comes from a single confusion: treating a colour problem as if it were a texture problem, or the reverse. They are different injuries and they need different work.

This guide explains how to identify what you actually have, what genuinely changes it, and what a realistic timeline looks like.

    01

First: is it a scar or a mark?

Stand at a mirror in soft, even light and look straight on. Then turn so light rakes across your cheek from the side.

If discolouration is visible straight on but the surface looks smooth in side light, you are dealing with post-inflammatory marks — red or purple in lighter skin, brown in deeper skin. These are not scars. They fade, though slowly, and they respond to pigment-focused care and disciplined sun protection.

If side light casts small shadows, the structure of the skin has changed. That is a true scar, and no serum will lift it.

This one distinction determines everything that follows — including whether you should be spending money on brightening products at all.

    02

The four scar shapes, and how each behaves

Rolling scars: broad, soft, wave-like depressions, usually on the cheeks. They respond best of the indented types because they are shallow and wide.

Boxcar scars: round or oval depressions with defined edges, like small craters. They improve substantially with collagen remodelling; the edges soften first.

Ice-pick scars: narrow, deep, needle-like punctures. The most stubborn category. They can be improved and softened, but honest expectations matter — full erasure is not realistic with resurfacing alone.

Raised (hypertrophic and keloid) scars: firm tissue sitting above the surface, more common on the jaw, chest and back. These need a different approach entirely and should not be treated with aggressive resurfacing.

Most faces carry a mixture. That is why a single protocol applied to the whole face tends to underperform.

    03

Why microneedling is the workhorse for indented scars

An indented scar exists because the healing process laid down too little collagen, or because fibrous bands tether the surface downward. To lift it, you have to rebuild the floor.

Microneedling creates thousands of controlled micro-channels that trigger a repair response: new collagen and elastin deposited exactly where the needle passed. Over weeks, the base of the scar rises toward the surrounding skin.

Because it works with your own repair biology, it is progressive. One session is a start, not a treatment. Most scar work runs three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, so the skin completes each remodelling cycle before the next stimulus.

Adding Purasomes exosome therapy into those channels supplies concentrated growth-signalling factors during the window when the skin is most receptive — which is why we often pair the two for scarring rather than treating with needles alone.

    04

Where peels and pigment work belong

For the colour half of the problem, a medical-grade peel does what topicals cannot: it accelerates turnover of pigmented cells and interrupts the melanin cycle that keeps re-darkening old spots.

The Perfect Derma Peel is our standard choice here — it is formulated to be safe across skin tones, which matters, because aggressive resurfacing in deeper skin can create the very pigmentation it was meant to remove.

Sun protection is not the boring afterthought of pigment treatment. It is the treatment. Without daily SPF, every session you pay for is partially undone before the next one.

    05

    A realistic sequence

Stabilise first. Active breakouts are settled before any resurfacing. Treating through inflammation creates new marks.

Correct texture next. A microneedling series, spaced properly, with the scar types mapped rather than guessed.

Address colour alongside. Peels and pigment-focused home care, timed so they do not collide with needling recovery.

Maintain. One or two sessions a year, plus sun discipline, holds what you built.

Microneedling is $350 per session at Amata Lucè. We will tell you at assessment how many sessions your pattern of scarring is likely to need — and if we think your scar type will not respond well, we will say so rather than sell you a series.

    Assessment in Burke, Virginia

Your first appointment is an assessment, not a treatment. We map scar types across the face under directional light, identify which are texture and which are pigment, review your history including any isotretinoin use, and build a sequence with dates.

Gloria Dawit-Puri, RN leads every assessment. Scar correction is slow, methodical work, and the plan matters more than the device.

Amata Lucè is in Burke, Virginia, serving Fairfax, Springfield, Annandale, Alexandria, Centreville and Northern Virginia.

    Common Questions

What is the difference between an acne scar and a post-acne mark?
A mark is a colour change — red, brown, or purple — in skin whose surface is still smooth. It fades over months. A scar is a change in the structure of the skin: a dent, a pit, or a raised area. Colour treatments will not fix texture, and texture treatments will not fix colour.
Does microneedling work for acne scars?
For indented (atrophic) scars, yes. Controlled micro-injury triggers new collagen in the floor of the scar so it gradually lifts toward the surrounding surface. Results build over a series of sessions rather than appearing after one.
How many microneedling sessions do acne scars need?
Most people need a series of three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, then occasional maintenance. Deep ice-pick and tethered scars improve but rarely disappear entirely.
How much does acne scar treatment cost in Burke, VA?
Microneedling at Amata Lucè is $350 per session. Exosome-enhanced treatment with Purasomes is priced separately, and monthly payment plans are available through Cherry.
Can a chemical peel remove acne scars?
Peels are excellent for post-acne discolouration and shallow surface irregularity. Deeper indented scars need collagen remodelling, so peels are typically used alongside microneedling rather than instead of it.
Should I treat scars while I am still breaking out?
Active inflammation should be settled first. Treating over active acne can spread bacteria and create new marks. We stabilise the skin, then correct the texture — in that order.
How long until I see results?
Collagen remodelling is slow by design. Expect early smoothing at around six to eight weeks after your first session, with the fuller change visible three to six months into a series.
